Book Cover Ideas

I decided to create a book cover for a book called, They Cage the Animals at night.  I Took several pictures and this is the one I decided to use and run with.  I some how want to display the title sitting on the links of the fence as seen above.

As you can see from above, with a red Sharpie maker I wrote out the title cut them out roughly with an x-acto knife and scanned them into photoshop to be used and manipulated for the title.  I really like how it scanned in, it gives of a sense of depth to it.

This was what I thought would be my final cover but after meeting with our group i decided to make some changes.

This is my final book cover, as you can see I didn't have the shadows around the book so strait and mechanical, I also added a third finger and made the fence on the back cover the same as on the front.  I'm please with the way it turned out.

Final Pictograms

After making the corrections I posted about earlier, this is what I ended up with.  Along with the black and white smaller versions.  This was harder to convert to black and white than I would have thought.  Your lines run together and create a big mess so it took some time to get it all worked out.... well there ya have it!

These are the printouts I turned in today.  I'm close to being done but I have to tweak some things.  The head is misleading I need to have that be a solid figure, also with the background I think I will change it to a solid darker gray color.  So my computer doesn't look so flat and on one plane, I'm going to rotate it and have it be a side view.  Hopefully by doing this it will interlock the three images together and read that they all interrelate.

After creating ten thumbnail sketches I narrowed it down to the concept I wanted to do, which is multi media.  Every where I look on campus people have their Ipods out, phones in hand, and Facebook pulled up on their computers.  I decided to do depict these three main concepts, because it seems to be everywhere around us.

Thumbnails of Pictograms

These are the first ten quick thumbnail sketches I have done for ideas for our pictograms, it's a start but I need to make them more detailed and interesting, not so typical.

Discovering the Pen Tool!

We were given an assignment to create a collage using pictures and then scan it into Illustrator and recreate it using the pen tool.  As you can see I have a long ways to go, but I ran out of time the image on the left is obviously the original collage, the image on the right  is the recreated version.  I'm pretty foreign to Illustrator so it takes me a while to figure things out, overtime hopefully I'll get it down.
